Library board debates rules for new AV loan program

Library Board · Meeting of January 13, 2026

Norwood library trustees questioned staff over liability risks in a new equipment-lending program. Library Director Clayton Cheever and technology staffer James outlined the planned "Morrill Makers" program, which will loan patrons a GoPro, lavalier microphones, podcast gear and a roughly $2,000 laptop for video and audio production, pending completion of an orientation and maker agreement. Trustee John R.

Hall pressed staff on how quickly the library could respond if borrowed equipment were used to create inflammatory content, warning the library might not learn about it "until they're walking up the hill with the torches burning." Staff said they would not exercise editorial oversight over patron-created content. Cheever separately reported e-book borrowing topped 30 percent of circulation for the first time this year. Trustee Sarah Begg said candidates for library trustee need signatures from more than 50 registered Norwood voters, with papers due around Presidents Day.
