Norwood Town Meeting OKs $1.8M safety override ask
Town Meeting · Meeting of May 14, 2026
Norwood Town Meeting backs $1.8 million public safety override, rejects free-cash alternative. Members approved a $67,222,432 FY27 school budget and $24,219,516 water and sewer budget before turning to Article 7, voting 126-40 to appropriate $1.8 million for 13 firefighters and five police officers contingent on a June 15 Proposition 2½ referendum. An amendment from member Mark "Tank" Nardelli to cut the hires to six firefighters and fund them from free cash failed 122-50.
Retired firefighter Paul Ronco told members Norwood has run with 60 firefighters since 1975 despite call volume more than doubling. Town Manager Mazzucco pegged the tax impact at about $115 a year for an average home. Town Meeting also approved $114,000 to restore the town hall's World War I cannon and $147,550 for softball dugout shade structures.
