Town Meeting OKs $300K for hospital eminent domain study
Town Meeting · Meeting of May 11, 2026
Norwood Town Meeting approves $300,000 to study taking the closed Norwood Hospital by eminent domain. Members voted 108-74 for the amended article after David Hearn narrowed its scope to "legal and financial analysis" tied to a potential taking. Task force representative Mazzucco told members critical-care transport from Norwood now takes "39 minutes" and that Medical Properties Trust demanded $375 million after rejecting a $250 million offer.
State Rep. John Rogers said his companion eminent-domain bill should clear the House Ways and Means Committee "this very week." Town Meeting also passed a $175.5 million fiscal 2027 budget using $7.4 million in free cash, 135-45. Finance Commission Chairman Fleming warned a general override will likely be needed in 2028 for fiscal 2029.
The meeting recessed to May 14 to finish the school budget.
